From opening day in early summer 2011, the Antigonish Town & County Library has become much more than simply a place to get books, but an intrinsic focal point of the community. Popularly known as "The People's Place" the library is located in the heart of the town, which enables many stakeholders to utilize and access the space. The People's Place is not only used for public internet access, child and adult education programs and writing workshops, but also by public leaders - all the while using energy and space wisely. The building contains ground source heating, solar domestic water heating and electric generation photovoltaic systems - all designed by A. H. Roy. The People's Place was designated as the winner of the 2014 Great Places in Canada competition in the Public Space category, a testament to the strength of design, implementation, and community.
