Mechanical Engineering Consulting

Full design and construction supervision for building mechanical systems including heating, air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing, fire protection, energy management and controls, and medical gas systems.

Electrical Engineering Consulting

Complete design and construction supervision for building electrical systems including power distribution, emergency and UPS power, lighting, communication, sound, public address, structured data wiring, fire alarm, controls and heating.

Special Features

The firm uses computer aided drafting systems, with a repertoire comprised of seven work stations using current CAD, AutoCAD and Revit drafting software. In addition, engineering software programs allow us to optimize mechanical and electrical systems. Some of these programs are Trane Trace Energy Analysis, Duct Design, Elite Hydraulic Sprinkler and Lighting Software Programs.

Experience & Success Record

The firm of A.H. Roy & Associates Ltd. is a multi-disciplined consulting engineering group that has been in business for over 50 years. We have primarily worked in the design of mechanical and electrical systems for buildings. At present, there are three registered mechanical engineers, two registered electrical engineers, one engineer-in-training, and a support staff of five people that includes drafting, secretarial and inspection personnel.

Over the past number of years, three regional hospitals have been designed by the firm: St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish; Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville; and Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. The value of each project was, $20, $30 and $100 million, respectively. We have also been involved in renovations and construction projects in many other hospitals in Nova Scotia.

For each of these regional hospital projects our firm prepared preliminary design packages, then proceeded to design and contract supervision of all mechanical and electrical systems including plumbing, sprinkler, medical gases, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, automatic controls, power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, nurse call, security and communication.

The firm has also completed design and supervision on a vast number of university residences and university buildingspublic schools and school renovations, community colleges including NSCC's Marconi Campus, Strait Campus, Pictou Campus and Akerley Campus, senior citizens housing complexes, commercial and institutional buildings, community facilities, performance spaces, office buildings and judiciary complexes to name a few. We have also completed design on a number of modern recreation facilities including the St. F.X. Millennium Center and the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

A number of industrial projects have also been completed including work on a variety of mining ventures: design of an electrical distribution system at Pioneer Coal in Stellarton, design of the Stora Enso (now NewPage Corp.) scalehouse in Point Tupper, and electrical upgrades at Martin Marietta Material's Porcupine Mountain Quarry. We have also completed work on water treatment facilities at Pictou Landing and Port Hood, and led the complete electrical and mechanical design of the Scotsburn Dairy Group facility in Truro.
