About Our Founder

TonyRoyIn 1964 when Tony Roy opened a private consulting practice, he was drawing upon nearly two decades of training and practical experience. His interest in engineering had been sparked during his studies at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in physics in 1951. Subsequently, he was awarded his Bachelor of Engineering degree in mechanical engineering in addition to winning the Alumni Medal and Athlone Fellowship from Technical University of Nova Scotia (now known as the Sexton Campus of Dalhousie University) in 1954.

Thus armed, he widened his horizons with a breadth of experience by becoming a student engineer in England at C.A. Parsons & Company Limited Steam Turbines Heaton Works, at Newcastle upon Tyne. Obtaining his Certification of Apprenticeship in 1956 he was awarded his Master of Science degree in thermodynamics and related studies by the University of Birmingham, England.

Upon returning to Canada, Tony worked on the design of new pulp mills in the Administration Engineering Department at Price Brothers Limited Paper Mill in Kenogami, Quebec from 1957 to 1958. Gravitating toward Antigonish, he returned to his alma mater as an assistant professor of engineering and consultant for the university.

To gain further experience in the field, he took charge of mechanical and electrical engineering for Lemieux, Tetrault & Associates in Montreal from 1962 to 1964, where he was responsible for the general engineering design of building systems and pollution control.

Later in 1964 Tony Roy opened the doors of his own company, A.H. Roy & Associates Limited, serving as president and chief executive officer of this multi-disciplined consulting engineering firm. A.H. Roy & Associates has contributed its expertise and knowledge to the design and supervision of over 1200 projects in the industrial, institutional, commercial, recreational, educational, health care and municipal fields.

Sadly, Tony Roy passed away on January 23, 2004. However, Tony’s influence is still felt at A.H. Roy and Associates. The business model he laid out is still followed, and the majority of the current A.H. Roy employees worked personally with Tony, enabling them to learn from his vast experience.
